What page one actually looks like for a local trade: eleven searches, one afternoon

James Sutton IV ยท Updated 2026-09-18

On 18 September 2026 we captured eleven searches for Las Vegas trades and for the agencies serving them, all in one sitting, with the location set to Las Vegas and personalisation off. The point was to find out what a customer actually sees before deciding which business to call, because most advice about ranking assumes a page of ten blue links that has not existed for years. Two searches for the same trade, on the same day, produced completely different pages.

1. How we captured it

Eleven queries, Google, United States, signed out, in a private window, on the afternoon of 18 September 2026. Six were customer searches: hvac las vegas, ac repair las vegas, general contractor las vegas, plumber las vegas, water heater repair las vegas, emergency plumber las vegas. Three were agency searches, covered in section four. Two more looked at how agencies in this industry appear, one of which is discussed below.

A word on method, because it matters on a page like this. The searches were run from a machine outside the United States with Google's location parameter set to Las Vegas, rather than from a device physically in the city. That returns the page a Las Vegas searcher is served, and it is not identical to standing on a street corner and searching: local results are weighted by precise position, and ours was set rather than measured. We would rather say so than let the word "captured" imply more than it should.

We record the same things every time: paid adverts, whether a map block appears and how many businesses are in it, which directories make the top ten, how many of the results are individual local businesses, and the questions Google shows in its "people also ask" panel.

A capture is a photograph of one moment. Results move, which is why every figure in this article carries its date.

2. What was on the page

All six customer searches returned a map block. In every single one, the businesses in that block sat above the first organic result.

Paid adverts varied more than anything else. "plumber las vegas" returned four, two of them formatted as local business listings with ratings and a call button rather than as text adverts, and one advert served from a Google Business page. "emergency plumber las vegas" returned two separate advert blocks plus a sponsored listing inside the map block itself. "general contractor las vegas" and "water heater repair las vegas" returned none at all.

Directories appeared in the top ten of five of the six customer searches; on the sixth, plumber las vegas, we did not record the directory listings, so it is left out of the count rather than assumed. Yelp appeared in all five that were recorded and Angi in one of them, and on "water heater repair las vegas" Yelp's list page carried 14,752 ratings. Reddit threads from a local subreddit appeared in three of the six, sometimes twice on one page.

For scale: the US Census counts 631 plumbing and air conditioning establishments in the Las Vegas metro, under the federal code that covers both trades together. County Business Patterns 2023, the most recent year published, which counts businesses with paid employees. The map block on that search held five businesses, though our capture names only four of them, so treat the fifth as recorded rather than identified.

3. Same trade, same city, same day, different page

This is the finding worth the exercise.

"plumber las vegas" is the phrase everyone in the trade wants, and it returned four paid adverts, one of them inside the map. A business ranking first organically on that page is below all of them.

"water heater repair las vegas" returned no adverts at all. The map block was led by a specialist rather than a general plumbing company, and the questions Google displayed included whether a permit is needed to replace a water heater in Las Vegas, which is a regulatory question, not a pricing one.

Both are plumbing. Both are Las Vegas. Both were captured within the same hour. Which phrase you are found for decides how much of the page you are actually reaching, and the phrase everyone competes for is often the one with the least page left on it.

4. What the agency searches showed

We also captured "hvac seo", "plumbing seo" and "contractor seo", because they show what a business owner sees when they go looking for help.

No map block on the first two, no adverts, and every result in the top ten was an agency or a publisher. "contractor seo" was different: it returned a business block, because Google reads that phrase as partly local, and the questions it displayed suggested searchers meant an SEO contractor rather than SEO for contractors.

One of the two remaining searches is the most interesting on the list. On "guaranteed seo las vegas", an answer written by Google's AI sat above everything else on the page, explaining what an SEO guarantee is, noting that Google warns no agency can promise a specific position, and naming companies before a single ordinary result appeared. One search, on one day, but the surface exists and it sits above everything.

Worth knowing if you are reading agency content today: you are reading the output of companies competing for exactly these phrases, including this article.

5. What this means for your website

Four things follow from a page shaped like this.

  • The map is not optional. In all six customer searches the map block sat above the first organic result. A Google Business Profile that is unclaimed or wrong costs more than a slow website does.
  • Some of page one is rented. Directories appear in the top ten of every search, and your competitors pay them monthly to be there. The organic slots genuinely available to your own site are fewer than the page suggests.
  • The phrase matters as much as the ranking. The high-intent phrase in a trade is often the most advert-heavy. A quieter phrase can put you above everything.
  • In Nevada, the page has rules. A licensed contractor's advertising must display the licence number, and the state board names the website among the places that applies. A missing number is a violation rather than a design decision.

We do this capture for every industry and city we work in, before writing a word of the page, because what page one holds decides what the page has to do.

How the guarantee works

FAQ

Why capture search results by hand instead of using a tool?

Because a rank tracker reports a position and not a page. Position four means one thing on a page with no adverts and something else on a page with four adverts and a map above it. The capture records what the customer sees.

Do these results apply outside Las Vegas?

The shape usually travels; the detail does not. Map blocks and directories turn up in local trade searches everywhere, but how many adverts appear, which directories rank and which questions Google shows are specific to the city and the trade. That is why we capture each one rather than assuming.

How often does page one change?

Enough that a capture older than a year is a historical document rather than evidence. Ours carry their date for that reason, and we recapture when a page is refreshed.

Does appearing in the map require a physical address?

A Google Business Profile requires either a location customers can visit or a defined service area. It is not something a website alone can produce, which is why profile work and site work are the same job in a local trade.
