SEO GUARANTEES

Can an SEO company guarantee first page rankings?

James Sutton IV ยท Updated 2026-09-18

Yes, within limits that can be written down, and no if the promise is a specific position. Nobody controls where a result lands, so an agency promising the number one spot is promising something outside its control. What can be promised is page one for a named list of phrases, within a named window, after somebody has measured what that market takes. The difference between those two sentences is the whole subject of this article.

1. What Google actually says about SEO guarantees

Google's own guidance on hiring an SEO is blunt about this. It tells businesses to be wary of anyone who guarantees a number one ranking, and notes that no one can guarantee a particular position in search results, because Google does not accept payment for ranking and the results are generated by an algorithm nobody outside the company controls.

That is worth reading carefully, because it rules out less than people assume. It rules out a promise of position. It does not rule out an agency taking responsibility for an outcome it has measured and priced.

2. Why a specific position cannot be promised

Three reasons, and none of them is about effort.

The results move by searcher. Page one for someone standing in your car park is not page one for someone eight miles away, because local results are weighted by distance. Two people searching the same words at the same moment get different pages.

The page itself is not a list of ten links any more. Search "plumber las vegas" and the first thing on the screen is four paid adverts, one of them sitting inside the map block. Search "water heater repair las vegas" the same afternoon and there are no adverts at all. Same trade, same city, same day, captured by us on 18 September 2026. A promise of "position three" means nothing when what sits above position three changes by the query.

And the competition does not stand still. Everyone else on page one is also working, and some of them have been at it for a decade.

3. What an agency can promise, and write down

A guarantee is only worth reading if it answers five things in writing. Ours does, and any agency's should.

  • Which phrases. Named in the contract, not chosen afterwards. If the list appears after the work starts, it will be full of phrases nobody searches for.
  • Who chose them. We propose, the client approves before work begins. An agency that picks its own targets will pick winnable ones.
  • What counts as success. Page one. Not "improved visibility", not "first page potential".
  • How many. Ours covers up to half the phrases in the contract, depending on how competitive the market turns out to be.
  • By when. Six months or twelve, set in the agreement.

An agency that will not put those five in writing is not offering a guarantee. It is offering effort with a confident tone.

4. The four questions to ask before signing anything

  • "Which phrases does this cover, and can I see the list before I sign?" If the answer is that the list comes later, the guarantee covers whatever turns out to be easy.
  • "What happens if you miss it?" There is a right answer and a wrong one, and the wrong one is a shrug. Our terms are written into each client's service agreement rather than advertised, and we will walk you through them before you sign.
  • "What did you measure before quoting?" The honest answer names things: domain age, existing backlinks and citations, current domain authority, and who holds the positions today. An agency quoting a monthly fee before looking at any of that is guessing.
  • "Have you ever declined a client because you could not get them there?" An agency that has never said no to anyone is not measuring anything.

5. How the First Page SEO Guarantee works

We measure first and quote second. The audit looks at who holds page one for your phrases today, how old those domains are, what links and citations they carry, and how strong their authority is. Those four things decide whether page one is a six month job or a twelve month one, and occasionally they decide that we should not take the work.

If we do take it, we propose the key phrases and you approve every one before work starts. The contract covers up to half of them reaching the first page of Google within the window it sets.

How the guarantee works

FAQ

Is a guaranteed SEO service a scam?

Not automatically, but the word covers both a written commitment and a sales line, and they look identical in an advert. The test is whether the promise names the phrases, the measure, the share and the window, and whether the agency will show you the list before you sign. If all four are in writing, it is a commitment. If any is missing, it is a line.

Can anyone guarantee the number one position on Google?

No. Positions are produced by an algorithm that weights the searcher's location among other things, so two people searching the same words get different pages. Any promise of a specific position is a promise about something the agency does not control.

How long should a first page guarantee take?

It depends on the market, which is why an agency should measure before quoting. Ours publishes two windows, six months and twelve, and which one applies is decided by the audit rather than by the sale.

What should an SEO guarantee cost?

There is no list price for this work, and an agency with one is quoting before it has looked at your domain, your existing links or your competition. Expect a number after the audit, not before.
