The numbers
18,345 businesses in New Mexico, across the trades we work in
- contracting companies: 2,934 Specialty trade contractors (NAICS 238). The figure counts every specialty trade, not contracting companies alone.
- restaurants: 1,329 Full-service restaurants (NAICS 722511). Excludes limited-service restaurants, which are 722513.
- churches: 1,054 Religious organizations (NAICS 813110). Counts congregations with paid employees only, so it understates the number of churches.
- dermatology practices: 835 Offices of physicians (NAICS 621111). Dermatology has no separate code and is counted inside this figure.
- plastic surgery practices: 835 Offices of physicians (NAICS 621111). Plastic surgery has no separate code and is counted inside this figure.
Source: US Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023, published on 2017 NAICS. County Business Patterns counts establishments with paid employees, so sole proprietors without employees are not in it. Population: US Census Bureau, Vintage 2024 Population Estimates (NST-EST2024-ALLDATA), 2023 estimate.
That is 2,934 contracting companies for 2,121,164 people, about one for every 723 residents in New Mexico.
The five above are 38% of the 18,345 businesses we count in New Mexico, and the other 41 trades share the rest.
